From Fox Business: As Tax Day nears, fiscally conservative leaders in several states are pushing to abolish property taxes, with one Pennsylvania lawmaker arguing that homeowners shouldn’t have to “pay rent” to the government.
That lawmaker, state Rep. Russ Diamond, R-Lebanon, spoke to Fox News Digital on Thursday ahead of his latest effort to end the collection of such taxes in the Keystone State.
Diamond will put forward a resolution — titled HB 900 — which Fox News Digital learned exclusively will be filed imminently. The document is a draft constitutional amendment he hopes will go to the voters on Election Day, and not a typical piece of legislation requiring gubernatorial approval.
The report further notes that Hawaii, Alabama and Nevada have the lowest effective property taxes, while New Jersey, Illinois and Connecticut rank among the highest.
Property taxes are used by local governments to fund schools, police and fire departments, road construction and repairs, libraries, water and sewer departments, and other local services that benefit the community.
However, many feel this is unfair because those who only rent and don’t own property receive all these same services as well. Some feel the money to provide these services needs to come from somewhere else.
Last week, Rep. Diamond posted a copy of the envelope as he is mailing in his property taxes, and wrote, “Received the first of two annual ransom notes from the gov’t yesterday to remain living in a property I ALREADY OWN. I send a check immediately so the ransom note isn’t laying around on the dining room table just pissing me off. Pardon my language, but property taxes are complete bullshit. I’m about to introduce my constitutional amendment to abolish them in PA, and am also formulating a more fair and equitable way to fund schools, counties, and municipal gov’t. Stay tuned.”

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is also calling to eliminate property taxes.
“Taxpayers need relief. You buy a home, you pay off the mortgage, and yet you still have to write a check to the government every year just for the privilege of living on your own private property. Is the property yours, or are you just renting it from the government?” he declared.

DeSantis also brought up the issue last month, saying, “You buy a home, you buy land… and then, you’ve been taxed many times [on that]… is it your property, or not? Just for being on your property, you’ve got to write a check to the government every year?”

Republican Vivek Ramaswamy, who is running for Governor of Ohio, is also calling to reduce and then eliminate both income and property taxes.
