On April 2, 2025, 17-year-old Karmelo Anthony fatally stabbed Austin Metcalf, also 17, in the chest during a confrontation at a high school track meet in Frisco, Texas.
The altercation reportedly began over a seating dispute under a team tent, escalating when Anthony, claiming self-defense, pulled a knife after Metcalf told him he needed to move. Anthony was charged with first-degree murder and initially held on a $1 million bond at Collin County Jail. Yesterday, however, Judge Angela Tucker reduced his bond to $250,000, allowing his release on house arrest with an ankle monitor.
This decision sparked outrage among many in the community, who felt the reduction was unjust, given the severity of the crime. Many believe Anthony should face life in prison, arguing the stabbing was premeditated. Others have demanded the death penalty, though prosecutors confirmed Anthony, a minor at the time, is ineligible for it. The case has stirred heated debate, with Anthony’s family raising over $400,000 for his defense, further fueling public discontent. As he awaits trial, the community remains divided, grappling with grief and questions of accountability.
