In the early hours of Thursday, May 22, the Republican-led House of Representatives narrowly passed President Trump’s “One Big, Beautiful Bill” with a tight vote count of 215-214.

The late-night session, following intense negotiations, marked a significant win for Trump, who had been pushing hard for the bill’s passage. However, the victory was marred by frustration among some conservatives and seniors, as the bill scrapped Trump’s campaign promise of no tax on Social Security benefits. In its place, the legislation offers a temporary $4,000 increase to the standard deduction for seniors from 2025 through 2028, which phases out for individuals earning over $75,000 and couples earning over $150,000.

The bill also permanently extends Trump’s 2017 tax cuts and includes temporary exemptions on taxes for tips, overtime pay, and auto loan interest, fulfilling some of Trump’s 2024 campaign pledges. Notably absent, however, were promises like the elimination of taxes on Social Security and broader tax relief measures for small businesses, which some Republicans felt were watered down. The package also boosts funding for border security and defense, with $350 billion allocated for immigration enforcement and military spending.

Critics, including some GOP hardliners, argue the bill doesn’t go far enough on spending cuts, adding an estimated $3.3 trillion to the national debt over a decade. Democrats, unified in opposition, decried the bill as a tax scam favoring the wealthy while cutting safety nets like Medicaid. Now, the bill heads to the Senate, where Republican lawmakers are already signaling potential revisions, setting the stage for further debate and possible changes.
