POLL: Have the Democrats become the party of violence?

17

In the wake of the tragic assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk at a Utah Valley University event, accusations have intensified that the Democratic Party has evolved into one that promotes and incites violence through inflammatory rhetoric and lenient crime policies.

Elon Musk, the influential CEO of Tesla and X, amplified these claims in a recent tweet, declaring that “The Left is the party of murder,” directly linking the killing to what he sees as a culture of hostility fostered by Democrats. Critics point to instances where Democratic leaders and influencers have used language that could be construed as endorsing confrontation or unrest, such as former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s 2018 comment questioning why there weren’t “uprisings all over the country” in response to Trump-era immigration policies. Similarly, Rep. Maxine Waters has previously urged protesters to “get more confrontational” if they saw Trump administration officials in public, a call that Republicans have long argued incites mob violence. More recently, Rep. Jasmine Crockett faced backlash in March 2025 for encouraging followers to “take down” Elon Musk and Tesla amid protests, with Republicans accusing her of fomenting attacks on Tesla properties and vehicles.

These examples are seen by detractors as part of a broader pattern where Democratic rhetoric demonizes conservatives, potentially radicalizing unstable individuals, as evidenced by a 2025 Network Contagion Research Institute survey showing significant left-leaning support for extreme actions against figures like Trump and Musk. This narrative has gained traction in the aftermath of Kirk’s murder, which conservative leaders describe as a direct result of years of left-wing media hysteria portraying right-wing figures as threats to democracy. Compounding these accusations is the brutal stabbing death of Ukrainian refugee Iryna Zarutska on a Charlotte, North Carolina, train, where the suspect, Decarlos Brown Jr., had been arrested 14 times previously but was repeatedly released under Democrat-backed “catch and release” policies in blue-led cities.

Musk and others, including Stephen Miller, have blamed such progressive criminal justice reforms for allowing violent offenders to remain on the streets, turning the incident into a flashpoint for claims that Democrats prioritize ideology over public safety, thereby enabling a surge in murders and political violence.
