Over 60 people are feared dead after an American Airlines regional jet collided with a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter and crashed into the Potomac River near Reagan National Airport.

American Airlines confirmed 60 passengers and four crew were aboard the jet, while three soldiers were on the training flight helicopter. Among the passengers were ice skaters, including former world champions Yevgenia Shishkova and Vadim Naumov. Emergency teams worked overnight, recovering one of the plane’s black boxes.

The collision occurred as the jet from Wichita, Kansas, approached Reagan, with the Black Hawk crew aware of its presence. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy stated both aircraft followed standard flight patterns with no communication failures. President Trump, on Truth Social, questioned the helicopter crew and air traffic controllers’ actions on what he called a clear night.

Fire chief John Donnelly stated no survivors are expected, with 28 bodies recovered so far in what may be the deadliest U.S. air disaster in over a decade.
