California Governor Gavin Newsom has faced significant criticism for perceived failures in managing multiple crises, which have eroded his once-strong political standing.
Earlier in 2025, his handling of devastating Los Angeles wildfires, which scorched over 17,000 acres, displaced 180,000 residents, and killed at least 10, drew scrutiny for inadequate preparedness and slow state response, with critics arguing he prioritized environmental policies over practical fire prevention.
More recently, Newsom’s leadership has been questioned during anti-immigration enforcement protests in Los Angeles, which escalated into riots involving violence, property destruction, and clashes with federal agents. These riots, sparked by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids targeting illegal aliens, saw protesters block highways, set fires, and confront law enforcement, with notable incidents like a dumpster fire and fireworks attacks in Paramount. President Trump, bypassing Newsom’s authority, deployed 2,000 National Guard troops and later 700 Marines from Twentynine Palms to protect federal property and personnel, citing Newsom’s inability to control the unrest.
Newsom condemned the deployment as “illegal” and “inflammatory,” filing a lawsuit with Attorney General Rob Bonta, arguing it violated state sovereignty and the U.S. Constitution. Critics, particularly conservatives, claim Newsom’s failure to secure Los Angeles and his confrontational stance against Trump highlight his weak leadership, potentially derailing his 2028 presidential ambitions. They point to his broader challenges, including a massive state budget deficit and rising homelessness, as further evidence of mismanagement. However, Newsom’s supporters argue his resistance to Trump’s actions positions him as a defender of progressive values, maintaining his appeal for a future presidential run. Despite these setbacks, they believe his high-profile defiance and media presence keep his national aspirations viable.
