Luigi Mangione, a 26-year-old from a wealthy Maryland family, has been charged with the murder of Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare.
Mangione was apprehended following a tip from a McDonald’s employee who recognized him from police appeals. At the time of his arrest in Pennsylvania, Mangione was allegedly carrying a 3D-printed “ghost” gun, a silencer, several fake IDs, and a handwritten manifesto that criticized healthcare companies for prioritizing profits over patient care. This manifesto reportedly contained phrases like “these parasites had it coming” and “I do apologize for any strife and trauma, but it had to be done.”
However, many social media users are noting the rest of the written manifesto sounds almost too doctored and squeaky clean, including a strange opening “thank you” line to federal law enforcement. And while the ongoing theory is Mangione sought revenge against United Healthcare over possible coverage issues with an unsuccessful back surgery, many are pointing out the details of Mangione’s travels leading up to the day, planning of the killing, and lack of escape from the country days after the assassination.
Questions being raised are how Mangione knew a conference was being hosted by United Healthcare when he began his travel from Hawaii to the mainland U.S. days before the public announcement of the meeting. They’re also being raised over the 3D-printed gun, strange social media breadcrumbs since his arrest, and discrepancies in some of the differing surveillance footage captured of Mangione following his shooting of Thompson.
Now add in rumors of an investigation into Thompson over secret insider trading…
In essence, some are suggesting the assassination of Thompson was likely an inside job and that Mangione, a troubled young man with a history of using psychedelic drugs for back pain alleviation, is the “fall guy,” or the plant in the assassination plot.
We want to ask you, the reader: do you think the CEO assassination was secretly an inside job? Answer in our poll below and comment your thoughts on the details of the case thus far.
