Over the weekend, the U.S. launched a series of large-scale airstrikes targeting Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen, aiming to curb the Iran-backed group’s attacks on Red Sea shipping.

President Trump described the strikes as “decisive and powerful,” involving air and naval forces hitting over 60 targets, including missile sites, drone facilities, and command centers across Sanaa, Saada, and other regions. The Houthi-run health ministry reported at least 53 deaths, including civilians, and over 100 injuries, with strikes hitting residential areas and a power station. U.S. officials, including National Security Advisor Michael Waltz, confirmed the targeting of senior Houthi leaders, though specifics remain unclear, and claimed the operation aimed to restore deterrence and secure international shipping lanes.

The Houthis condemned the attacks as a “war crime,” vowing retaliation and continued targeting of U.S. and Israeli-linked ships in solidarity with Palestinians. Trump warned Iran to cease support for the Houthis, threatening severe consequences, while Iran’s foreign ministry denounced the strikes as a violation of international law. The U.S. Central Command stated the campaign might continue for weeks, with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth emphasizing an “unrelenting” approach until Houthi attacks stop.

The operation involved fighter jets from the USS Harry S. Truman in the Red Sea, with CENTCOM claiming precision strikes to minimize civilian harm. Critics raised concerns over the high civilian toll and potential escalation, while the UN called for restraint to avoid further destabilization in Yemen.
