Cuba is currently gripped by a severe energy and economic crisis, highlighted by multiple island-wide blackouts, the latest of which plunged much of the nation into darkness.
These power outages are worsened by U.S. sanctions and an oil blockade that have severely restricted fuel imports, which Cuban officials blame for crippling the outdated power grid. The nation also grapples with widespread shortages of food, medicine, and basic supplies, as well as water shortages, postponed medical operations, and protests that have occasionally turned violent.
Since the 1959 Cuban Revolution, the country has been under communist rule, transitioning from Fidel Castro to the current leader, Miguel Díaz-Canel, with a system of centralized economic planning and one-party control. This communist model has rendered Cuba a failing country through decades of mismanagement, suppression of freedoms and markets, and reliance on now-lost foreign subsidies, resulting in chronic poverty and mass exodus.
Growing discussions with the U.S. have emerged under President Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, involving direct talks where Cuba has released political prisoners amid demands for broader reforms. These developments have sparked speculation about the U.S. potentially acquiring Cuba as a state or territory, inspired by the regime’s vulnerability and Trump’s mentions of a “friendly takeover.” Such speculation stems from the humanitarian and economic collapse, which could lead to major geopolitical shifts following U.S. actions in other nations. Secretary Rubio has addressed related theories by declaring that Cuba needs “new people in charge” and must implement dramatic changes to its failing political and economic system for any sanctions relief. Trump has reinforced this by stating Cuba is in “very bad shape” and that America “will be doing something with Cuba very soon,” emphasizing leadership and policy overhaul over annexation.
