During Wednesday’s oral arguments in U.S. v. Skrmetti, Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor compared the side effects of transgender medical procedures for minors to those of over-the-counter painkillers.

Additionally, Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, a liberal Joe Biden appointee and the first Black woman on the Supreme Court, compared gender transitions for children to interracial marriage.

Their comments followed Tennessee Solicitor General Matthew Rice’s defense of the state’s ban on gender-affirming care and procedures, marking the first time the issue has reached the high court. The case focuses on Tennessee’s 2023 law banning all of the following: gender transition surgeries, puberty blockers, and hormone therapy for minors.

The law was being challenged by the Biden administration and transgender teens, represented by ACLU attorney Chase Strangio, a biological woman identifying as a man and supporting gender-affirming procedures for young children.

We want to ask you, the reader: do you support gender-affirming surgery for children? Answer in our poll below and comment your thoughts on the Supreme Court case.
