During a recent dinner meeting at Mar-a-Lago in Florida, U.S. President-elect Donald Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau discussed several contentious issues, including trade, tariffs, and border security.
The meeting was prompted by Trump’s earlier threat to impose a 25 percent tariff on all goods imported from Canada due to his concerns over illegal immigration and drug trafficking.
In this setting, Trump jokingly suggested that if the proposed tariffs were to cripple the Canadian economy, perhaps Canada should consider becoming the 51st state of the United States. This comment was reportedly met with nervous laughter from Trudeau and others present. Trump continued the jest by saying that while “prime minister” was a better title, Trudeau could serve as the governor of the new state. There was even a light-hearted remark from someone at the table that Canada would be a very liberal state, to which Trump suggested it could then be split into two states – one conservative and one liberal.
Trump reportedly reiterated his expectations for changes from Canada by January 20, 2025, when he would be sworn in as the 47th President of the United States.
We want to ask you, the reader: do you support idea of Canada becoming the 51st state? Answer in our poll below and comment why you think it would be a good or bad idea.
