Vice President JD Vance and Second Lady Usha Vance recently altered their travel plans to Greenland, shifting from a multi-day cultural visit to a brief stop at the U.S. Pituffik Space Base.

Initially, Usha Vance was set to visit the capital, Nuuk, and attend events like the annual dogsled race, but the itinerary changed after VP Vance decided to join her. The adjustment came in response to significant resistance from Greenlanders, who have expressed strong opposition to U.S. annexation efforts led by President Donald Trump. Greenland’s outgoing Prime Minister Mute Egede called the original plan a “provocation,” reflecting widespread sentiment against becoming part of the United States. Surveys show that while many Greenlanders support independence from Denmark, an even larger majority reject joining the U.S. The scaled-back trip now focuses solely on a military base visit, avoiding direct engagement with Greenlandic society.

This change has been welcomed by Denmark, which oversees Greenland’s foreign policy, as a de-escalation of tensions. Critics argue that the Trump administration’s aggressive push to acquire Greenland, including Trump’s threats to take it “one way or another,” disregards the island’s self-determination. Supporters, however, see it as a strategic move to secure Arctic resources and bolster global security. The episode has sparked debate over whether the administration’s tactics are excessively forceful in pursuing control of the Danish territory.

We want to ask you, the reader: do you feel the Trump administration is going too far with its attempts to acquire Greenland? Answer in our poll below and comment your thoughts on the change-up of the scheduled trip.
