The U.S. has ordered a strike group of fighter jets and navy warships to speed up its deployment to the Middle East amid concerns of possible attacks by Iran and its allies following the killing of senior members of Hamas and Hezbollah.

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin directed the Abraham Lincoln strike group to accelerate its deployment to the region and announced the deployment of a guided missile submarine after consulting with his Israeli counterpart, Yoav Gallant. Analysts pointed out that it is uncommon for the Pentagon to publicly announce submarine deployments.

The U.S. military had already planned to send additional fighter jets and warships to the Middle East to strengthen Israeli defenses.

The assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, the political leader of Iran-backed Hamas, in Tehran on July 31, led to threats of retaliation by Iran against Israel. While Iran has blamed Israel for the killing, Israel has not claimed responsibility.
