Following President Donald Trump’s implementation of sweeping tariffs on global imports, the U.S. stock market experienced a significant downturn, with the S&P 500 plunging nearly 6% and the Nasdaq dropping 5.8%, marking some of the worst single-day losses since the COVID-19 pandemic.

The tariffs, which include a 10% baseline on all imports and up to 54% on goods from major trading partners like China, have sparked fears of a global trade war, leading to a $4 trillion loss in the S&P 500’s value from its February peak. Investors are reacting to the uncertainty and potential for higher consumer prices, with tech giants like Apple and Nvidia seeing sharp declines of around 5%. In comparison, Tesla lost 15% of its value in a single day. Some market analysts are predicting a “Black Monday” on April 7, drawing parallels to the 1987 crash, as global markets continue to reel from the tariff turmoil.

However, Trump and his supporters argue that this is short-term pain for long-term gain, with the White House claiming the tariffs will revive American manufacturing and spur economic growth over time. Critics, including some investors, believe the markets are overreacting, pointing to Trump’s history of using tariffs as a negotiation tactic rather than a permanent policy. They argue that the volatility may subside once the administration clarifies its endgame, as seen in past tariff rollbacks.

Meanwhile, some have suggested that the market drops reflect manipulation, alleging that Trump’s tariff announcements are strategically timed to allow his allies to “buy the dip” before an eventual recovery. This theory, while unproven, fuels speculation that the market’s reaction may be exacerbated by coordinated financial strategies among Trump’s supporters. Despite the chaos, some defensive sectors like utilities have held up better, gaining 1%, and safe-haven assets like U.S. Treasury bonds are seeing increased demand, with 10-year yields dropping to 4.22%.

We want to ask you, the reader: do you believe the stock market is manipulated? Answer in our poll below and comment your thoughts on the market reactions to the tariff implementation.
