The visit followed an anonymous FBI tip about Gray’s threats on Discord to shoot up a middle school. Jackson County officers documented their interaction with the then 13-year-old Gray in a May 21, 2023, report.

During the police questioning, Colin Gray, father of the suspect, dismissed the visit as unfounded and described his son’s challenges, including bullying at Jefferson Middle School and family issues due to divorce and eviction. Colin emphasized that Colt was aware of the seriousness of the situation and had been doing well despite wanting to leave the school district.
