President-elect Donald Trump has named his campaign manager, Susan Summerall Wiles, 67, as his White House chief of staff, making her the first woman to hold the position.
In a statement, Trump said that Wiles “just helped me achieve one of the greatest political victories in American history” and “is tough, smart, innovative, and is universally admired and respected… It is a well-deserved honor to have Susie as the first-ever female chief of staff in United States history. I have no doubt that she will make our country proud.”
The Trump transition team is selecting leaders for the 15 executive departments, including secretaries of state and defense, ahead of the January 20 start date. In his victory speech, Trump referred to Wiles as “the ice maiden,” acknowledging her reputation as a formidable political operative who typically works behind the scenes.
A Politico profile this year described Wiles as a feared yet little-known political figure. She began her career with Ronald Reagan’s 1980 campaign and later shaped Florida politics. In 2010, she transformed businessman Rick Scott into Florida’s governor within seven months; he is now a U.S. senator. Wiles met Trump during the 2015 GOP primary, co-chairing his successful Florida campaign in 2016. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who entrusted her with his 2018 gubernatorial race, called her “the best in the business.”
