POLL: Do you approve of more Chinese students coming to the U.S.?

7

President Trump’s recent announcement to allow approximately 600,000 Chinese students into U.S. universities has sparked significant controversy, particularly among his MAGA base.

The decision, part of ongoing trade negotiations with Chinese President Xi Jinping, marks a shift from the administration’s earlier restrictive visa policies, which included heightened vetting and plans to revoke visas for students linked to the Chinese Communist Party. During a meeting with South Korean President Lee Jae Myung, Trump emphasized the importance of this move, citing economic benefits and the need to maintain a strong U.S.-China relationship. At a subsequent Cabinet meeting, Trump doubled down, calling it “insulting” to block Chinese students and arguing that their tuition dollars prevent the collapse of struggling U.S. colleges.

This stance has drawn sharp criticism from prominent MAGA supporters, including Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, who argued that allowing these students prioritizes foreign interests over American opportunities and risks supporting institutions “propped up by the CCP.” Far-right activist Laura Loomer labeled the students “Communist spies,” claiming the policy undermines Trump’s “America First” agenda. Other conservative voices, like commentator Marina Medvin, expressed disbelief, stating that no Trump voter supports this move. Some MAGA influencers, such as Chase Geiser, questioned the economic rationale, noting it could push American students to lower-tier schools.

However, a minority of supporters cautiously supported the idea, suggesting that educating China’s elite could help revive American cultural influence in China. Still, the backlash illustrates a deep ideological divide, with many Trump supporters viewing the decision as a betrayal of his campaign promises, especially amidst ongoing trade tensions and national security concerns.
