POLL: Do you approve of Marco Rubio’s performance as Secretary of State?

6

Marco Rubio assumed the role of Secretary of State in January 2025 and quickly implemented sweeping reorganizations to streamline the department by cutting hundreds of positions and redundant offices.

He has received widespread praise from President Trump, who has repeatedly called him the “greatest Secretary of State in the history of our country” for his diplomatic prowess in high-stakes negotiations. Rubio’s handling of Venezuela, including quarterbacking the U.S. military operation that ousted Nicolás Maduro, has earned compliments for advancing American interests in Latin America and curbing regional instability. On Iran, Rubio has been lauded for his firm stance amid threats of retaliation against regime actions, positioning him as a key voice in maintaining pressure without immediate escalation. His involvement in discussions over Greenland, including meetings with Danish and Greenlandic officials to address Trump’s acquisition ambitions, has been highlighted as a stabilizing force.

A running joke in political circles and the media portrays Rubio as holding “multiple jobs,” such as serving as an interim national security adviser, acting USAID administrator, and even head of the National Archives, culminating in his humorous remark about having the “most meaningful Labor Day” ever.

Critiques of Rubio include accusations that he gutted human rights bureaus and USAID, despite his past support for the agency, raising concerns about a diminishing U.S. focus on democracy promotion. Some diplomats and observers view him as a “mute accessory” to Trump’s aggressive policies, arguing that his shifts from hawkish interventionism to “America First” isolationism have damaged alliances and long-term U.S. credibility.

Despite these criticisms, Rubio’s high-profile successes, particularly in Venezuela, have boosted his odds in 2028 presidential prediction markets, placing him second behind Vice President JD Vance. Many believe his performance as Secretary of State could propel him toward a future White House bid, especially if he navigates ongoing challenges like Iran and Greenland effectively, though he has publicly stated he would not run against Vance.
