Last night, two significant Republican-led amendments failed in the House, disappointing many GOP voters who viewed them as critical to combating government overreach and bias.
The first amendment, proposed by Rep. Eli Crane, aimed to defund the National Endowment for Democracy (NED), an organization accused of fueling global censorship and domestic propaganda. This defunding effort was important to Republican constituents, as it aligned with calls from figures like President Trump to eliminate funding for NED, which receives hundreds of millions in federal dollars annually. The amendment failed on a 127-291 vote, with 81 Republicans joining all Democrats to reject it, effectively voting to continue NED’s funding despite the GOP’s House majority.
The second amendment, introduced by Rep. Chip Roy, sought to reduce funding for the District of Columbia’s district and appeals courts by 20% while eliminating salaries and expenses for the staffs of Judges James Boasberg and Deborah Boardman, Obama and Biden appointees seen by Republicans as activist judges hostile to Trump. This measure was vital to GOP voters frustrated with judicial decisions perceived as politically biased against conservative interests. It failed on a 163-257 vote, with one present, as 46 Republicans voted against the amendment, siding with Democrats to preserve the courts’ funding and the judges’ staff resources.
These failures highlighted a divide within the Republican Party, with a significant number of representatives defying their constituents’ preferences in a chamber they control. Widespread disappointment erupted among GOP supporters, with social media filled with calls to primary the dissenting Republicans and accusations of a “uniparty” betraying America First priorities.
