According to a newly released report, the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), initially led by Elon Musk, has been officially disbanded.
The announcement came quietly from the Office of Personnel Management (OPM), confirming that DOGE no longer operates as a standalone entity. OPM Director Scott Kupor stated in the report that all remaining functions and roles of DOGE have been fully absorbed into OPM to streamline federal operations. This absorption includes transferring DOGE’s staff and ongoing efficiency initiatives into OPM’s broader personnel management framework; however, it will no longer be an independent agency as initially established.
The disbandment occurred eight months ahead of DOGE’s original mandate, which was set to expire in July 2026. President Trump has begun referring to DOGE in the past tense during recent public appearances, signaling the end of the initiative.
Elon Musk’s departure from Washington in May 2025, amid previously reported tensions with the Trump administration, marked a turning point for the project. Some observers believe DOGE was doomed to fail following Musk’s break from the White House, as it lost its primary visionary and momentum.
