Here’s a story that has practically been ignored by the mainstream media.
From Petoskey News: Northern Michigan’s devastating ice storm, which crippled power grids, snapped trees like matchsticks and left entire communities in the dark, is being called one of the most severe weather events in the region in over a century.
“This is easily the worst ice storm in modern times — in the last 50 years — and you have to go back all the way to 1922 to find something even remotely close,” said Harold Dippman, meteorologist with the National Weather Service office in Gaylord. “It’s a generational storm, one people will talk about for the rest of their lives.”
Though specific statewide icing records are still being assessed, the event’s prolonged duration, relentless rainfall and catastrophic damage clearly set it apart. Between Friday evening and Monday morning, some areas saw 2-5 inches of precipitation — much of which froze to trees and power lines, leading to widespread outages and road closures.
“It was catastrophic,” Dippman said. “Roads were impassable for almost 48 hours. There are still places off the beaten path that you can’t access. In terms of infrastructure, the power grid will likely need to be rebuilt from the substations out to neighborhoods.”
Tens of thousands of people have been left without power.
According to ABC13 News, fallen trees and power lines are still blocking roads in many areas, leaving people trapped in their homes, without power and without the ability to communicate.
Officials are also warning of the danger of falling ice, as temperatures were expected to rise enough on Friday that some of the ice may start melting and falling.
The devastation has been mostly skipped over by the mainstream news, but photos and videos being posted on social media show a total catastrophe.

The following videos were shared on Monday:
Power poles are all seen lying on the ground, snapped off like toothpicks.
One person noted it sounds like a war zone, as trees can be heard crashing to the ground night and day.
Author Adam Bray wrote, “Here in Northern Michigan this is the worst Ice storm I’ve seen in my 50 years. It sounds like a war outside for 2 days with constant tree explosions. 2 days already with no power or water and minimal heat. And they say 5 more days with no electricity (no water)–all nights freezing temps and one in the teens. This is National Disaster level stuff. I hope those in authority have the decency to call for it.”

Not sure how this isn’t getting more national news, but Northern Michigan is in a literal crisis and @GovWhitmer has declared a state of emergency. Power outages everywhere, down power lines, and whole forests completely destroyed by ice storms. pic.twitter.com/5IUwBe5x7E
