From Fox News: The spirit of the Olympics was on full display during the first day of the track and field events in Paris Friday.
Laotian sprinter Silinia Pha Aphay and Lucia Moris of South Sudan were side by side in the first heat of the women’s 100-meter prelim, competing for a top three spot to advance to the first round.
According to The Washington Post, Pha Aphay noticed around the halfway mark that Moris, who was in the lane next to her, had gone down.
Pha Aphay crossed the finish line with a season best of 12.45 seconds, but it wasn’t enough to crack the top three.
The Washington Post report explained that Pha Aphay had placed at sixth place in the race, ending her Olympic dreams. But that was all forgotten when she saw Moris lying on the track, screaming in pain and holding her right leg.
Pha Apahy began waving for medics to come help, suspecting that Moris had injured her hamstring.
“Pha Aphay stayed with Moris as medics strapped her to a yellow stretcher. She placed her hand on Moris’s shoulder. She placed a pair of orange shoes next to the stretcher. Medics carried Moris away, her body immobilized,” the Washington Post wrote.
