First Deputy Mayor Sheena Wright is reportedly the next high-level official to step down under NYC Mayor Eric Adams, following federal investigations that have led to Adams’ indictment on corruption charges.

Wright’s departure comes after her husband, NYC Schools Chancellor David Banks, also left his position. Just one day after Mayor Adams appeared in federal court on corruption charges, the timing of their Martha’s Vineyard wedding has raised speculation that the couple may have married to invoke “spousal privilege,” which can offer immunity from testifying against each other.

FOX 5 New York reported that David Banks previously stated that their recent wedding had been planned for some time and that neither he nor his wife, Sheena Wright, are targets of the ongoing federal corruption probe involving Mayor Eric Adams’ administration.

Despite this, federal agents raided their shared residence on September 4, along with the homes of other top officials in Adams’ administration. Agents confiscated Wright’s and Banks’ electronic devices, though the investigation’s focus remains unclear. Amid growing scrutiny, Governor Kathy Hochul has urged Adams to “clean house” by addressing any unethical conduct within his administration. However, The New York Post reported that a city hall spokesperson could not confirm Wright’s impending resignation.

Following Mayor Eric Adams’ federal indictment, he issued an executive order ensuring that if Sheena Wright could not perform her duties, her powers would transfer to Deputy Mayor Anne Williams-Isom. A video from The New York Post shows a frustrated Wright outside her Harlem home, where she attempted to grab a photographer’s camera after reporters asked for comment. Wright accused the reporters of “harassing” her and demanded more privacy.
