President-elect announced Friday that a former member of his first administration, Morgan Ortagus, would be serving again in his new administration.
Ortagus, 42, served as spokesperson for the State Department from 2019 to January 2021.
However, Trump’s announcement contained a few pointed barbs, as he indicated this appointment wasn’t his idea. He wrote:
I am pleased to announce Morgan Ortagus as Deputy Special Presidential Envoy for Middle East Peace, to the Honorable Steven Witkoff. Early on Morgan fought me for three years, but hopefully has learned her lesson. These things usually don’t work out, but she has strong Republican support, and I’m not doing this for me, I’m doing it for them. Let’s see what happens. She will hopefully be an asset to Steve, a great leader and talent, as we seek to bring calm and prosperity to a very troubled region. I expect great results, and soon!
Morgan Ortagus has had experience in Diplomacy and National Security, and is an active U.S. Navy Reserve Intelligence Officer. From 2019-2021, Morgan served as Spokesperson at the Department of State (Pompeo!), where she was a member of my Historic Abraham Accords team that brought unprecedented Peace to the Middle East. Earlier, she worked at the Department of the Treasury as a financial intelligence analyst and, from 2010-2011, was the Deputy U.S. Treasury Attaché to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
Good luck Morgan!
Ortagus responded by posting the following statement:

Sen. Markwayne Mullin wrote, “President Trump made a great pick in @MorganOrtagus. She’s served our nation honorably, both as an active U.S. Navy Reserve Intel Officer and veteran of the Trump State Department. I’m confident Morgan will help us deliver peace through strength in the Middle East.”

In an apparent response to Trump’s controversial statement, Scottie Nell Hughes posted a copy of a statement with a far different tone from January 2022.
“Throwback to the last time @realDonaldTrump made an announcement about @MorganOrtagus who has been a strong supporter of Trump & his agenda for many years,” Hughes wrote.
Ortagus re-tweeted the post.

President Trump’s decision to select Morgan Ortagus to serve as Deputy Special Presidential Envoy for Middle East Peace to Steve Witkoff is an outstanding choice.
As the former spokeswoman for the State Department under President Trump, Morgan understands the region as well as anyone I’ve ever met. She served in Saudi Arabia as Deputy Treasury Attaché and has extensive ties to the State of Israel. She is well known throughout the region and highly respected in Congress. She will be an invaluable asset to Witkoff as they pursue historic change in a troubled region.
Under President Trump’s leadership, in his first term, he destroyed the ISIS caliphate, weakened Iran and had four Arab nations recognize Israel.
I firmly believe President Trump and his team are going to rewrite the history books when it comes to the Middle East because he is respected by our allies and feared by our enemies.

Cheers to @MorganOrtagus on her appointment as President Trump’s deputy special presidential envoy for Middle East peace.
Morgan is an extremely effective diplomat, intel officer, communicator, and operator.
The President’s best friend Steven Witkoff + Morgan = powerful combo.
