During recent discussions on proposed reforms to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Representative Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) openly criticized Republican lawmakers, particularly those who emphasize their Christian values.
She accused them of attempting to “take food from the hungry” through the suggested changes. Crockett expressed her views on social media, stating, “It blows my mind that the party that touts its ‘Christian values’ is the same party that is SET on taking food from the hungry.”
The controversy centers around a Republican-backed proposal to reform SNAP as part of President Trump’s broader legislative agenda. The proposed changes aim to tighten eligibility requirements and introduce a cost-sharing model for states. Under this model, states would initially cover 5% of SNAP benefit costs, with the percentage increasing based on their payment error rates. For instance, states with error rates between 6% and 8% would pay 15%, those between 8% and 10% would pay 20%, and states exceeding a 10% error rate would be responsible for 25% of the benefits.
The House Agriculture Committee passed the legislation with a 29-25 vote. Supporters argue that the reforms are necessary to restore the program to its original intent and ensure fiscal responsibility. They believe that by requiring states to share in the costs, there will be a greater emphasis on reducing payment errors and fraud within the program.
Opponents, including Crockett, contend that the reforms would disproportionately affect vulnerable populations who rely on SNAP for food assistance. They argue that tightening eligibility and shifting financial responsibility to states could lead to reduced access to essential nutrition support for those in need. Crockett emphasized the importance of SNAP, describing it as “the LARGEST federal program to fight hunger in the country!”
Let’s clear something up: SNAP stands for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program — the LARGEST federal program to fight hunger in the country!
It blows my mind that the party that touts its “Christian values” is the same party that is SET on taking food from the hungry.
