NASA is tracking a giant asteroid named 2024 ON, which is about 950 feet in diameter and classified as “stadium-sized.” It will pass by Earth at a distance of 621,000 miles on Tuesday night, which NASA considers a close approach.
According to a Fox News Digital report, the asteroid will be close enough to Earth to be deemed a “potentially hazardous object,” but Earth is unlikely to be impacted.
Over the next two days, five asteroids will approach Earth, with 2024 ON being the closest at 621,000 miles. The others, ranging from 1.1 to 3.9 million miles away, include three roughly 51 feet in diameter, akin to a house, and one, 2013 FW13, about 510 feet across, passing by on Wednesday.
NASA’s tracking shows 2024 ON speeding at approximately 8.8 kilometers per second or nearly 20,000 miles per hour.
“The dashboard displays the date of closest approach, approximate object diameter, relative size and distance from Earth for each encounter,” the organization’s website explains. “The dashboard displays the next five Earth approaches to within 4.6 million miles (7.5 million kilometers or 19.5 times the distance to the moon); an object larger than about 150 meters that can approach the Earth to within this distance is termed a potentially hazardous object.”
