NUTRITION NEWS: These 3 ingredients are banned in the UK over health concerns — but not in the US

FROM NY POST: The UK’s regulations on food additives are generally stricter than the US’ because Britain takes a proactive approach to food safety, requiring additives to be proven safe before approval and banning those with potential risks.

The US takes a more reactive stance, permitting additives until they are shown to be harmful.

Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has long sought to overhaul the US’ food additive regulations. He announced plans to phase out eight petroleum-based food dyes from the food supply — but other ingredients have raised health concerns as well.

Three potentially unsafe ingredients used in the US but banned in the UK include potassium bromate, azodicarbonamide, and mineral oil hydrocarbons.

Here is a brief explanation of each.

Potassium bromate

A synthetic powder that strengthens gluten in flour for fluffier dough.

Why it’s a problem

The UK banned potassium bromate in 1990 due to cancer concerns. California banned it in 2023, effective in 2027.

Azodicarbonamide

A synthetic ingredient that improves bread texture, whitens flour, and produces foam plastics.

Why it’s a problem

Azodicarbonamide, linked to asthma and cancer concerns, is banned in the UK and restricted by the FDA, which is reviewing its approval.

Mineral oil hydrocarbons

Jolly Rancher candies were found to contain illegal substances in the UK.

Why it’s a problem

These chemical compounds are primarily derived from crude oil and they can enter the food.

“MOAH can cause damage to DNA and has the potential to increase the risk of cancer, particularly if consumed in high quantities over a prolonged period of time,” the UK’s Food Standards Agency said.

MOSH dietary exposure is not considered a health risk, though research is ongoing. The US has not set regulatory limits for MOSH and MOAH in food.

Asked about US policies on the ingredients, an HHS spokesperson declined to “comment on future or potential policy decisions.”

“Secretary Kennedy remains firmly committed to delivering on President Trump’s promise to Make America Healthy Again, examining and addressing the root causes of the chronic disease epidemic,” the spokesperson told The Post.
