House Intelligence Committee Democrats opened an inquiry Monday into the Trump administration’s decision to revoke 37 officials’ security clearances and publicly list their names.
Last month, DNI Tulsi Gabbard pulled clearances from several current and former officials tied to the Biden administration or critical of President Trump’s policies. Gabbard had charged those listed with politicizing or leaking intelligence or “committing intentional egregious violations of tradecraft standards.”
Rep. Jim Himes (D-Conn.), the committee’s top Democrat, requested detailed evidence supporting each revocation with the following written statement signed by all Democratic members on the panel: “If there is evidence of misconduct to warrant revoking the clearances of these 37 individuals, some of whom were senior IC officers at the time of your memo, it would indicate a systemic issue in the granting of security clearances. It is hard to imagine an issue more deserving of congressional oversight and corrective action… If, however, these revocations occurred outside of established process and don’t reflect fundamental risk, an immense amount of IC knowledge and capability has been lost.”
The letter noted that one of the officials was serving undercover when the revocations were announced and questioned why Gabbard’s office made the list public. Himes then added that others on the list possess critical skills or are working on top intelligence priorities.
“At least two of the individuals listed in the memo are currently employed as congressional staff, raising serious separation of powers concerns,” he wrote.
Among them is a former National Security Council staffer, once exposed by independent journalist Laura Loomer, who worked for then-Intel Chair Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) during President Trump’s first impeachment and has since rejoined his office. The letter pressed Gabbard on whether proper protocol was followed, including advance notice, appeal rights, and agency consultation.
