OpenAI CEO Sam Altman will personally donate $1 million to President-elect Trump’s inaugural fund, his spokesperson confirmed, distinguishing it from company contributions by Meta and Amazon, which also donated $1 million each.
“President Trump will lead our country into the age of AI, and I am eager to support his efforts to ensure America stays ahead,” Altman said in a statement Friday shared by his spokesperson.
Tech industry donations to Trump’s inaugural fund are seen as efforts to court him before his second term, primarily as he builds ties with Elon Musk. Trump’s relationship with Zuckerberg has been tense since Facebook banned him after Jan. 6, 2021, with Trump once calling the platform an “enemy of the people.”
Trump’s first-term relationship with Amazon and Jeff Bezos was also strained, with Trump criticizing Amazon and The Washington Post. In 2019, Amazon claimed in court it lost a Pentagon contract due to Bezos’s criticism of Trump.
Musk, a co-founder of OpenAI, has criticized Altman and the organization for shifting from a nonprofit to a for-profit model, alleging manipulation to secure his early support. He is suing OpenAI for abandoning its original principles.
