Former Republican House Speaker Newt Gingrich told The Daily Wire that growing anger over illegal immigration motivated him to advocate for legal immigration.

Gingrich and his wife Callista are releasing a documentary next month showcasing immigrant stories that have positively shaped the U.S.

“Callista and I wanted to make the case for legal immigration with all of the anger about illegal immigration. We wanted a diverse range of people and people who would be plainly recognized,” said Gingrich. “Some of them are great personal stories but not necessarily historic — but still unique in what they contributed to America. Some contribute in sort of an everyday way, some in more of a historic way.”

Newt and Callista’s upcoming PBS documentary, Journey to America: With Newt and Callista Gingrich, explores legal immigration amid ongoing U.S. immigration debates. With Trump set to retake the White House, discussions around worker visa programs and their economic impact have intensified.

The documentary highlights immigrant contributions, featuring stories of Albert Einstein, Catholic missionary Francesca Cabrini, and actress-inventor Hedy Lamarr. Lamarr, a star of 1941’s Ziegfeld Girl alongside Jimmy Stewart and Judy Garland, also pioneered technology foundational to WiFi, GPS, and Bluetooth.

“For me, the most interesting piece was Hedy Lamarr. I knew of her as an actress but not how much she had contributed as an inventor even while she was working in Hollywood,” Gingrich added. “As we developed the script, I realized that she had contributed technology we still use in our cell phones today.”
