California Gov. Gavin Newsom convened a special legislative session Monday to allocate $25 million for lawsuits against the incoming Trump administration, aiming to “Trump-proof” the state.

Newsom framed the session as part of leading the political “resistance” to President-elect Trump rather than addressing state issues. According to Breitbart News, Trump responded  to Newsom on Truth Social, saying the blue state governor was “using the term ‘Trump-Proof’ as a way of stopping all of the GREAT things that can be done to ‘Make California Great Again’.”

Newsom vowed Monday to take an offensive stance against Trump policies, unlike his predecessor Jerry Brown. He cited past successes in reversing Trump’s actions, such as restoring $1 billion for California’s stalled high-speed rail project under Biden. Newsom also claimed to have worked closely with the Trump administration during the pandemic while continuing lawsuits against it.

Despite Democratic supermajorities in California’s legislature, nearly 40% of the state voted for Trump over Vice President Kamala Harris in 2024. Newsom, seen as a potential Democratic frontrunner for 2028, opted not to challenge Biden or Harris in 2024.
