Conservative activist Brandon Straka, founder of the #WalkAway movement, is on a new mission: to save New York City residents from electing muslim Democrat socialist Zohran Mamdani as their mayor.
Straka, a former liberal, launched the #WalkAway campaign in 2018 as an effort to encourage people to leave the Democratic Party, and thousands responded. Now he’s asking New Yorkers to walk away from socialism.
Although he is from Omaha, Nebraska, Straka, 48, lived in New York City for most of his adult life. He has now returned to New York, and is holding a rally at 1:00 p.m. Sunday afternoon, titled, “Rally Against Democratic Socialism.”
The event will feature multiple speakers, along with a public debate at Union Square.
“I came back to fight to save NYC. If New York City falls to socialism, the rest of America won’t be far behind. This isn’t just our battle—it’s yours, too,” Straka has warned.
Saturday evening, Straka shared a poster about his rally and wrote:
After the rally tomorrow, we are opening the microphone for an open air debate on the topic of socialist policies in NYC. All New Yorkers are welcome to approach the microphone and ask questions, debate, and discuss issues related to this topic. Nothing like this has ever been done before in New York! This will be extraordinary!! JOIN US!!
Straka first posted the following announcement on July 9:
Tomorrow I am moving back to NYC for the rest of the year. I care deeply about the city I lived in for many years, and I’m going to fight with everything I’ve got to save her. I’ve said many times that every year is an election year, and that every election needs to be viewed as a national election. What happens in New York City matters greatly to the entire nation. Now more than ever.
If Democratic socialism is normalized in New York, it will be normalized in California, Washington, Hawaii. It will be normalized in major cities in states across the nation. It will become a cancer on our free society that we will fight perpetually if we don’t stop it now.
We do have an opportunity to save NYC. It won’t be easy. But nothing I’ve done the past 7 years has been easy. I’m hoping that any of you in the NY area will join me in this fight. Volunteer. Show up for our events. Help me organize.
Now more than ever we need to liberate the minds of all people who have been taken in by the radical left.
I have a proven track record of growing a massive movement of former liberals, leftists, and Democrats. Let’s roll up our sleeves and save NYC together. And let’s save our country as a whole. 🇺🇸 The power belongs to all of us. Let’s do this. 👊
The next day, Straka announced:
Off to NY. Today begins the first official day of truly moving forward with my life after being being falsely charged, convicted, and government supervised for 4 years for a “crime” I did not commit.
I’ll begin looking for a new place to live for the rest of this year in NYC. The victory of a Democrat Socialist as the Democrat party candidate for mayor of NYC in this year’s election was a calling to me: Get back to the city you love NOW. Fight to save NY. This city needs you.
If NYC falls to socialism, so shall cities and states all across America. It is a door that can not be opened. My first event is Sunday, July 27th in Union Square Park in NYC. I really need volunteers (both in person and at home to make phone calls, send emails, etc).
As soon as Straka got to New York, he began doing media interviews, in an effort to spread awareness. Sharing a video of one interview, he wrote:
I’ve returned to NYC to fight against radical progressive socialist takeover of our city. Mamdani supports radical leftist policies that make NYC exponentially less safe, like:
• Defunding the Police
• Abolishing ICE & Non-Cooperation with Federal Immigration Enforcement
• Backed Ending Cash Bail
• Decriminalizing fare evasion, public drug use, and loitering

I’m calling upon all, moderate Democrats, independence, libertarians, unaffiliated, and Republicans to come together for the cause of uniting to save New York City from radical extremist takeover.
Straka was among the 1,500-plus people who had been convicted over the January 6, 2021 riot at the U.S. Capitol, who President Donald Trump pardoned on his first day back in office. Straka has said he was only outside the building, acting as a journalist, and never even stepped foot inside the Capitol building.
Still, the Democrat-led January 6 prosecutors had Straka arrested, and he was convicted in 2022 of a misdemeanor disorderly conduct charge. He was sentenced to three years probation, including three months of house arrest, and ordered to pay a $5,000 fine. Straka’s probation term was set to end on January 24, 2025, and Trump pardoned him on January 20.
On Saturday, Straka posted a video from his interview with Newsmax, and wrote:
“I went through hell. My name, my reputation—nearly destroyed. But I came back. And I came back for one reason: New York City🗽 In this clip, I speak from the heart about why I’m standing up and fighting back—because I refuse to let this city fall into the hands of a radical Democrat socialist who wants to tear it all down.
This isn’t just politics. This is personal. I came of age in New York. It shaped me. And I’ll be damned if I watch it be destroyed without a fight.”
