From Fox News: A former analyst with the National Security Agency said that China is positioning equipment in “strategic places” that could be used to disrupt U.S. commerce after rogue communication devices were found inside Chinese solar power inverters.

Rogue communication devices that were not in official product documents were found inside Chinese solar power inverters when they were examined by U.S. experts for possible security issues, two sources told Reuters.

The two sources said that the rogue power inverters have undocumented communication channels which could be used to circumvent firewalls remotely, which could have major consequences. These power inverters connect the solar panel to electric grids.

Rocky Cole, former intelligence analyst at the National Security Agency and co-founder of iVerify, told Fox News Digital it’s “very conceivable” that China is using these rogue power inverters to gain access to American infrastructure.

More from Reuters:

U.S. energy officials are reassessing the risk posed by Chinese-made devices that play a critical role in renewable energy infrastructure after unexplained communication equipment was found inside some of them, two people familiar with the matter said.

Power inverters, which are predominantly produced in China, are used throughout the world to connect solar panels and wind turbines to electricity grids. They are also found in batteries, heat pumps and electric vehicle chargers.

WATCH the following alarming interview with journalist Michael Shellenberger. He noted that the Chinese have been installing “kill switches” in the panels, which would then allow them to shut off power at random.

Shellenberger said, in part:

The Chinese, who manufacture virtually all of our solar panels…have been installing cellular radios inside the inverters, which can act as kill switches.

There was actually a Chinese solar company that turned off the solar panels and sent up a little message to its users, saying: we’ve turned this off because these solar panels are only authorized to be used in certain countries.

… So we know that the Chinese solar companies—all of which essentially can be used as arms of the Chinese military…they are able to to switch off large amounts of solar. And if you are able to do that, then you are able to cause the de-powering and blackouts of the grid.

How big of a problem is this?… I think most national security experts view this as something that the Chinese could do if there was, for example, an invasion of Taiwan, and the United States decided to defend Taiwan. The Chinese could potentially trigger blackouts in the United States and Europe. As crazy as that sounds, that is the reality, and there’s not any debate about it.
