NEWS ALERT: Trump sets deadline to thin field in crowded NYC mayoral race in attempt to stop Mamdani

New York City is now only three months away from potentially electing a radical Democrat Socialist as their mayor, and President Donald Trump is trying to prevent it.

From the New York Post: President Trump told a prominent New Yorker he wants long-shot mayoral hopefuls to bow out of the crowded field — by next week — in an attempt to stave off a socialist-run City Hall, The Post has learned.

Trump on Sunday rang up billionaire businessman John Catsimatidis, who has longtime ties to both Mayor Eric Adams and GOP nominee Curtis Sliwa, and voiced his dismay about what might happen to the Big Apple if Zohran Mamdani, the Democratic front-runner and proud socialist, wins in November.

“He is concerned about the New York City race. He does not want a socialist mayor, and he said, ’It’s not going to happen’ under his watch and wants a person under his watch,” Catsimatidis told The Post.

“At the end of the next 10 days, he wants the most qualified candidate to beat Mamdani,” Catsimatidis explained, sharing details about his discussion with President Trump.

Current polls show that former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo has the best chance of beating Mamdani. Sliwa is polling in third place, and current mayor Eric Adams is a distant fourth.

Laying aside his personal preferences, President Trump is reportedly trying to get Sliwa and Adams to step aside and let Cuomo run against Mamdani alone, so as not to split the vote.

The White House has reportedly been trying to find a new role for Adams, in an effort to entice him to give up on his re-election bid.

However, Adams and Sliwa have so far both declined to exit the race.

During a press conference on Thursday, Cuomo told reporters he doesn’t know anything about Trump’s efforts and brushed it aside, saying, “I don’t want him involved in anything to do with my race.”

A new poll released last week by Tulchin Research revealed that Cuomo would emerge as the winner if the race was only between he and Mamdani.

If all candidates remain in the race, the poll shows the following data:

  • 42% – Zorhan Mamdani (Democrat Socialist)
  • 26% – Andrew Cuomo (Independent)
  • 17% – Curtis Sliwa (Republican)
  •   9% – Eric Adams (Independent)
  •   3% – Jim Walden (Independent – dropped out this week)

If the race is only between Cuomo and Mamdani, the tables turn:

  • 52% – Cuomo
  • 41% – Mamdani

Sliwa, a Republican who has run for NYC mayor multiple times, ignored his bleak polling results and blasted the notion that Trump may be trying to get him to step aside.  In a post on X Wednesday, he wrote:

“The ONLY job I’m interested in is being the next Mayor of NYC. I have not been contacted by the White House and i’m not interested in a job with the White House. My focus is right here in New York City, as it has always been. I’m the only candidate on a major party line who can defeat Mamdani, and I’m committed to carrying this fight through to Election Day. The people of New York City deserve a Mayor who will finally make the city work for the hard working people who power it. This is a distraction from the issues forcing New Yorkers to flee everyday. Absolute misinformation.”
