Amid the rioting in Los Angeles and the war of words flying back and forth, President Donald Trump was asked Monday morning if Border Czar Tom Homan should make good on his promise to arrest California Gov. Gavin Newsom.
Homan had declared over the weekend that Newsom should be arrested for aiding and abetting illegal aliens.
Newsom had fired back, daring Homan to arrest him, and threatened to file a lawsuit against the Trump administration for deploying the National Guard.
As President Trump returned to the White House Monday morning, Fox News reporter Peter Doocy asked the president if Homan should arrest Newsom.
“I would do it, if I were Tom. I think it’s great,” Trump quipped, adding, “Gavin likes the publicity.”
Then, he came closer and added, “He’s done a terrible job. Look, I like Gavin Newsom. He’s a nice guy, but he’s grossly incompetent.”

Newsom fired back in reaction to the video, writing, “The President of the United States just called for the arrest of a sitting Governor. This is a day I hoped I would never see in America. I don’t care if you’re a Democrat or a Republican this is a line we cannot cross as a nation — this is an unmistakable step toward authoritarianism.”

Newsom just announced Monday afternoon that he’s filing a lawsuit. He wrote:
NEW: We are suing Donald Trump. This is a manufactured crisis. He is creating fear and terror to take over a state militia and violate the U.S. constitution. The illegal order he signed could allow him to send the military into ANY STATE HE WISHES.
Every governor — red or blue — should reject this outrageous overreach. There’s a lot of hyperbole out there. This isn’t that. This is an unmistakable step toward authoritarianism that threatens the foundation of our republic. We cannot let it stand.

In another post on his official X account, Newsom announced: “I’m filing a lawsuit against the Trump administration to end the illegal takeover of @TheCalGuard, which has escalated chaos and violence in LA.”
“Donald Trump’s violation of the U.S. Constitution is an overstep of his authority. We will not let this stand.”

Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) wrote, “What’s happening in Los Angeles is a threat from the left. They demand open borders, or they will riot. And Dem politicians like Newsom will back them. It won’t work. We must never tolerate this lawlessness.”
Newsom retorted, “The only one supporting lawlessness is you and every one of Trump’s minions who are allowing him to illegally militarize our city and incite violence.”
