From the New York Post: President Donald Trump is reportedly eyeing reclassifying marijuana as a less dangerous drug, a move that could expand medical marijuana research and ease industry restrictions.
At a $1-million-a-plate fundraiser at his New Jersey golf club earlier this month, Trump told attendees he’s interested in pursuing the change, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing sources familiar with the matter.
Fundraiser guests included Kim Rivers, chief executive officer of Trulieve, a top marijuana company, who encouraged Trump to pursue the change and expand medical marijuana research, said the report.
Former President Joe Biden was considering such a classification change that would have also made it easier to buy and sell weed before losing last year’s presidential election to Trump.
According to at least three other people present at the event, President Trump listened to the suggestions and said he was interested.
More from the Wall Street Journal:
The fundraiser conversation was part of a campaign by cannabis companies to persuade Trump to pick up where the Biden team left off and reclassify the drug. The companies have contributed millions to the president’s political groups and hired some of the Washington’s top lobbyists and advisers to Trump. The companies went to Trump directly after failing to gain traction across other agencies in the government.
Senior officials in Trump’s administration have noted that Trump himself is not a supporter of marijuana, but is listening to those who have promoted it for medical purposes.
Trump also stated that his administration would focus on research to unlock the medical uses of marijuana, the WSJ wrote.
The Marijuana Herald has been reporting this for a while now, but it’s good to see the issue getting more media attention. https://t.co/lQue0hDX9e
