BREAKING: Trump Assassination Plot Uncovered by Secret Service

From the New York Post: US authorities were warned about a potential assassination plot against former President Donald Trump by Iran weeks before the deadly shooting at Saturday’s rally — underscoring concerns about the level of protection that the presidential candidate was given, according to a report.

Although there is no known connection between Thomas Matthew Crooks and the Iranian republic — considered a rogue state by the US government — advance knowledge of such a threat appears wildly out of alignment with Trump’s level of protection at the Butler, Pa. rally.

The Trump campaign declined to address the outlet’s inquiry whether they were aware of the threat, but the Secret Service has “added protective resources and capabilities to the former President’s security detail,” agency spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said in a statement.

CNN, who first reported on the alarming development, quoted a U.S. national security official as saying, “Secret Service learned of the increased threat from this threat stream. NSC directly contacted USSS at a senior level to be absolutely sure they continued to track the latest reporting. USSS shared this information with the detail lead, and the Trump campaign was made aware of an evolving threat. In response to the increased threat, Secret Service surged resources and assets for the protection of former President Trump. All of this was in advance of Saturday.”

The report also noted that Secret Service officials have warned the Trump campaign repeatedly against holding outdoor rallies, as it’s harder to control access.

Iran has repeatedly vowed revenge for the US military’s killing of Qasem Soleimani, the commander of the Iranian military’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, in January 2020. And former senior Trump administration officials who worked on national security have had tight security since leaving the government.

Former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo was also a target of the Iranian assassination plot, according to a federal law enforcement source familiar with the investigation and a source close to Pompeo.

Trump’s former national security adviser, Robert O’Brien, had a US government security detail due to threats from Iran, like Pompeo and other former Trump officials, but that detail was dropped last summer, according to sources familiar with the matter. O’Brien is now paying for his own private security detail, sources said.

Fox News host Laura Ingraham reacted, writing, “Now suddenly we learn of an Iranian plot against Trump? Anything else?”

Students for Trump Chair Ryan Fournier wrote, “There’s now an Iranian plan to assassinate Trump. Pray for this man. Pray for his family. Secret Service just upgraded his protection to near the level it was when he was the sitting POTUS.”

Alyssa Griffin, co-host on ABC’s ‘The View,’ wrote, “Very, very troubling that there was a known threat against Trump by a foreign adversary & yet a domestic would-be assassin was nearly able to carry out an attack on him. This raises even more questions about USSS failures.”
