From CBS News: The Trump administration announced Wednesday a renewed effort to terminate the Temporary Protected Status of more than 350,000 Haitian immigrants, saying they will be eligible for deportation in early February unless they have other legal means to remain in the U.S.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem made the decision after the Trump administration’s initial attempts to end the TPS protections of hundreds of thousands of Haitians earlier this year were stalled in federal court.
Noem acknowledged the humanitarian and political problems faced by crisis-stricken Haiti — including what she called “widespread gang violence” — but said extending the TPS policy would be at odds with U.S. interests.
“Based on the Department’s review, the Secretary has determined that while the current situation in Haiti is concerning, the United States must prioritize its national interests and permitting Haitian nationals to remain temporarily in the United States is contrary to the U.S. national interest,” the official DHS termination notice said.
DHS had attempted to terminate deportation protection for the Haitians months ago, but a judge had blocked it.
In the official announcement Wednesday to terminate TPS for the Haitians, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services announced, “Because of interference by a federal district court judge, the designation of Haiti is set to expire on February 3, 2026.”

A DHS press release on Wednesday announces that the US will provide a free plane ticket and $1,000 for each Haitian who returns to their own country. The statement reads:
The termination of the Haiti Temporary Protected Status designation is effective February 3, 2026. If you are an alien who is currently a beneficiary of TPS for Haiti, you should prepare to depart if you have no other lawful basis for remaining in the United States.
You can use the CBP Home mobile application to report your departure from the United States. This secure and convenient self-deportation process includes a complimentary plane ticket, a $1,000 exit bonus, and potential future opportunities for legal immigration to the United States.
A pro-migrant group called HaitianBridge is already trying to get the termination order blocked again.
HBA calls on the US gov to reverse the decision to terminate TPS for Haiti and urges Congress to create a permanent, humane pathway for Haitian TPS holders.
“If Haiti doesn’t warrant TPS, which country does?” says HBA’s Executive Director, Guerline Jozef

Temporary Protected Status is supposed to be temporary, and was granted to Haiti after a series of natural and political disasters, starting with a catastrophic earthquake in 2010.
However, Democrats claim it should be permanent. Haiti has descended into political chaos over the years, due to lack of a functioning government, and violent gangs.
Rep. Gregory Meeks (D-NY) fumed, “The Trump Administration, hellbent on ending TPS for Haitians, will be remembered for their cruelty and attacks against Haitians living lawfully in the United States. They must reverse course now.”

Elijah Manley, a 26-year-old Democrat who is running for U.S. Congress in Florida’s 20th District, also raged against the move.
“Florida’s 20th Congressional District likely has the largest Haitian migrant population in the country. I am horrified to hear that the Trump administration has ended TPS starting February 2026. In Congress, I will sponsor legislation to extend TPS for Haitians and Venezuelans,” Manley declared.
