From KAKE.com: NEWTON, KS – Authorities say a gas leak caused an explosion and fire at a Newton barn on Thursday afternoon.

Crews responded after 3 p.m. on Thursday to the report of a large fire at a chicken barn in the 1400 block of N West Road.

Crews arrived to find a large fire and requested assistance from neighboring communities for water supply to fight the fire.

According to the Newton Fire Department, the barn was at or near capacity with 20,000 chickens inside.

Authorities said one person was also inside the barn at the time of the fire, but was uninjured.

The Harvey County Sheriff’s Office said the tragic explosion was caused by a gas leak.

Newton is located just north of Wichita, Kansas.
