From NBC News: The Supreme Court on Friday allowed the Trump administration to terminate Education Department grants for teacher training that officials deemed to violate their new policy opposing diversity, equity and inclusion efforts.
The 5-4 decision blocks a Massachusetts-based judge’s ruling that said the administration had failed to follow the correct legal process in terminating the grants. About $65 million in grant payments are outstanding.
The decision is the first win for President Donald Trump at the Supreme Court in his second term.
Five of the court’s conservatives were in the majority, while Chief Justice John Roberts joined the three liberals in dissent.
The unsigned decision said that the district court judge did not have authority to order that the funds be paid under a federal law called the Administrative Procedure Act.
The Department of Education had announced on Feb. 17 that it was cancelling the grants, saying the programs “promote or take part in DEI initiatives or other initiatives that unlawfully discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, or another protected characteristic.”
On March 6, 2025, eight states, including California, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Colorado, Illinois, Maryland, New York, and Wisconsin all filed a lawsuit trying to prevent the Trump administration from yanking the funds.
U.S. District Judge Myong Joun, a Biden appointee, issued a ruling on March 10 that blocked the Department of Education’s (DOE) effort to cancel the DEI-related grants. Judge Joun, who was born in South Korea and came to the U.S. as a child, had previously served on the ACLU Board of Directors from 2009-2014.
Now the Supreme Court has ruled against Joun, and in favor of the Trump administration, allowing the grants for the DEI-related trainings to be cancelled.

After the ruling, Attorney General Pam Bondi released the following statement:
“Today marks a significant victory for President Trump and the rule of law. This Supreme Court ruling vindicates what the Department of Justice has been arguing for months: local district judges do not have the jurisdiction to seize control of taxpayer dollars, force the government to pay out billions, or unilaterally halt President Trump’s policy agenda. Department of Justice attorneys will continue fighting to protect the executive branch from gross judicial overreach.”

Education Secretary Linda McMahon wrote, “Today’s Supreme Court ruling is an important step towards realizing the President’s agenda to ensure that taxpayer funds that support education go toward meaningful learning and serving our students – not to train teachers in radical racial and gender ideologies.”

A Big win for the Trump admin today! The Supreme Court, in a 5-4 decision, allowed the halt of $65M in teacher training grants tied to DEI programs. The case, Department of Education v. California (2025), overturned a lower court ruling by Judge Myong Joun that had blocked the cuts.
The majority (conservatives minus Roberts) argued the district court lacked jurisdiction under the Administrative Procedure Act, while dissenters like Justice Jackson warned of harm to schools. https://apple.news/A3vMvr3KoRFOt0ncW1Atg
