From the Washington Examiner: House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) has decided to remove Rep. Mike Turner (R-OH) as chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, a source familiar with the decision confirmed to the Washington Examiner.

Turner was appointed chairman of the committee in January 2023 after first joining as a member of the panel in 2015. It’s not yet known who Johnson will tap to replace Turner on the powerful committee.

It’s unclear why Turner was removed from the leadership position, but his hawkish stance on foreign policy, in particular on Ukraine, was at odds with President-elect Donald Trump. Leaving the Capitol on Wednesday, Johnson told reporters that the committee simply needed a “fresh start” when asked if Trump had been involved.

“This is not a President Trump decision, this is a House decision,” Johnson said. “This is no slight whatsoever to our outgoing chairman, he did a great job.”

CBS News host Margaret Brennan wrote, “I spoke with House intel chair Mike Turner (R-OH) who told me that Speaker Johnson has fired him as chair of the committee overseeing the intelligence community. Johnson cited “concerns from Mar a Lago” as justification for the removal. Rep Jim Himes (D-CT) tells CBS that this “just sends a shiver down my spine.””
