From the New York Post: A Minnesota shoplifting spree turned out to be something far more nefarious — with police alleging the deranged suspect was plotting to carry out a religiously-charged “mass-casualty” shooting within hours.
Mohamed Adan Mohamed, 24, was arrested on April 17 after he took off from a Mankato sporting goods store with more than $2,000 worth of ammunition magazines, body armor and bear spray, according to Blue Earth County charging documents.
Store employees had noticed Mohamed prowling about the shop in an oversized jacket, medical mask and hat, and grabbing expensive items off the shelves without checking the prices.
When they confronted him, he explained he was buying supplies for his AR-style rifle, according to the docs.
Police were called to the scene over reports of a suspicious person, but before they could arrive, Mohamed ran off with the goods as store security tried to stop him. He then leapt into a minivan without plates and sped away — jumping a curb and nearly hitting somebody in the process, the papers alleged.
But here’s where the story really gets wild….
In his haste to flee the scene, Mohamed left behind his shopping list, which was labeled, “Survival Gear List with Alternative”. Items on the list included a sleeping bag, gun magazines, pepper spray, knives, lighters and bow and arrows.
In reviewing the list, one of the police officers recalled a recent investigation of a man (Mohamed) who had been posting videos of himself pointing a gun at the camera, along with the hashtags, “deathtoamerikkan” & “israelliImperialism.”
Police also noted that the vehicle seen at the Scheels store in Mankato where he stole the items matched the description a vehicle registered to the same Mohamed whose social media posts they had investigated to just a couple weeks ago. While searching Mohamed’s home, police seized an assault rifle and two 3D-printed guns.
Police determined there were strong indicators that Mohamed was planning some sort of mass casualty attack within the next 24 hours, and arrested him at his home. He is reportedly being held on a $500,000 bail with conditions or $1 million with no conditions.
According to the Mankato Free Press, a police detective first learned of Mohamed’s social media posts on April 9. In one post he allegedly posed holding a rifle and wrote, “this is what ICE will see if they show up to kidnap me.”
The robbery took place in Mankato, but Mohamed lives in St. Peter, Minnesota, which is about 13 miles north of Mankato, and about 70 miles southwest of Minneapolis.
The media does not mention any information about Mohamed’s nationality, but there is a community of Somalian refugees in St. Peter, as well as a larger Somali community in Mankato.
