From the Daily Mail: A gunman has opened fire near an Orthodox Jewish synagogue in Baltimore.

Shots rang out near the Agudath Israel of Baltimore in the city’s quiet Glen neighborhood just after 12.30pm Tuesday.

A Baltimore police officer was struck in the incident, the force said. The officer was transported to University of Maryland Medical Center’s Shock Trauma center.

The suspect has also been shot.

Officers reported taking sniper fire from inside the building, according to Broadcastify audio obtained by WMAR. It is unclear if shots were fired in the synagogue.

Police were forced to take cover behind cars as the gunman fired at them, the outlet reported.

Although the shooting happened near a synagogue, it does not appear to be directed toward the Jewish facility.

The Baltimore Police Department announced on X, “BPD is on scene of an Active Shooter Incident in the 6200 block of Park Heights Avenue. An officer has been shot & transported to Shock Trauma. A suspect was also shot. Avoid the surrounding areas. More information will be provided as it becomes available.”

In an update, the department added, “Media Staging Area will be at the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center, at the intersection of Penn Street and W. Lombard Street. Officers remain in the 6200 block of Park Heights Avenue, and multiple streets are closed. Please continue to avoid the area.”

In a press briefing, police said they were responding to a 911 call about a burglary in process. As soon as they arrived, the suspect started firing on them. The suspect was shot by a sniper officer and is now deceased. The suspect’s identity has not yet been released.

Police said the suspect was holding one person hostage inside the residence, with a gun pointed at her head, and another woman jumped out the window to flee from the suspect.

The police officer was shot in the leg, and is in stable condition.
