From the Washington Examiner: Vice President Kamala Harris‘s vow to create a carve-out for the filibuster to pass abortion legislation has cost her support from Sen. Joe Manchin (I-WV).
Manchin, a centrist senator who has fought to maintain the filibuster, had indicated supporting Harris’s bid for president after he left the Democratic Party earlier this year, but he said Tuesday that removing the filibuster would be a mistake.
“I have been consistent on the importance of protecting the 60-vote threshold, which we call the filibuster, since I arrived at the United States Senate. This threshold stabilizes our democracy, promotes bipartisan cooperation, and protects our nation from partisan whiplash and dysfunction,” Manchin said in a statement.
“I have always said: ‘if you can’t change your mind, you can’t change anything’ and I am hopeful that the Vice President remains open to doing just that,” he added.
Manchin, a former Democrat, switched his party affiliation to Independent in May, but still caucuses primarily with Democrats.
Harris declared in an interview on Wisconsin Public Radio Tuesday that she supports eliminating the Senate filibuster to codify Roe v. Wade.
Speaking with CNN’s Manu Raju on Tuesday, Manchin slammed Harris, and said, “Shame on her. She knows the filibuster is the Holy Grail of democracy. It’s the only thing that keeps us talking and working together. If she gets rid of that, then this would be the House on steroids.”
Now that Harris has vowed to gut the filibuster on this issue, Manchin said he won’t be endorsing her for president.
“That ain’t going to happen,” he told CNN. “I think that basically can destroy our country and my country is more important to me than any one person or any one person’s ideology…I think it’s the most horrible thing.”

Manchin warned in another interview that once the filibuster is eliminated, “you start down a slippery path.”
“I’m not endorsing her. I’m not endorsing her,” Manchin flat declared as he walked away.

Sen. Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona, another former Democrat who switched to Independent, also blasted Harris for her call to eliminate the filibuster.
“To state the supremely obvious, eliminating the filibuster to codify Roe v Wade also enables a future Congress to ban all abortion nationwide. What an absolutely terrible, shortsighted idea,” Sinema declared.
