From the New York Post: Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) has offered Republicans a “compromise” to end the government shutdown.
In a floor speech Friday, Schumer floated a “clean, one-year extension” of Affordable Care Act (ACA) subsidies to be appended to a stopgap funding bill.
“After so many failed votes, it’s clear we need to try something different,” he noted. “What the Senate is doing isn’t working for either party — and isn’t working for the American people.”
“Democrats would like to see an end to the shutdown — and we want to respect Leader Thune’s desire not to negotiate on ACA until after the government reopens,” he said, flanked by members of the Senate Democratic caucus.

Leader Thune just needs to add a clean one-year extension of the ACA tax credits to the CR so that we can immediately address rising health care… pic.twitter.com/HvgLZHhhhb

Schumer doubled down in a pair of posts on X.
He wrote: “DEMS SIMPLE PROPOSAL: A simple one year extension of existing ACA tax credits. Re-open the government. Establish committee to continue negotiations for long-term lower healthcare costs.”

“The path forward is simple and achievable: reopen the government, extend the existing ACA tax credits for one year, and begin bipartisan talks on long-term healthcare affordability. The ball is in Republicans’ court,” Schumer added.

Republican Sen. John Kennedy of Louisiana, well known for his fiery zingers, had some choice words in response to Schumer’s “compromise” offer.
“God please give me patience, because if You give me strength, I’m going to need bail money,” was Kennedy’s first response.
“What Sen. Schumer is suggesting is that we do the dumbest thing possible that won’t work. Stupid should hurt more,” he added.
“Sen. Schumer says we just extend the status quo for a year…. that means we would have to take $35 BILLION of taxpayer money and give it directly to health insurance companies without any commitment of lowering costs. How is that going to reduce premiums?” he asked.
He said the health insurance companies would just put that money into their pockets.
“I mean, duh… Earth to Chuck! Am I going to vote for this? The short answer is ‘no’. The long answer is ‘hell no!'” Kennedy declared.

Speaking from the Senate floor, Sen. Kennedy scolded Democrats, saying they’re just keeping the government shut down because they don’t like that Donald Trump is the president.
“My Democratic colleagues need to drink a cold, tall glass of ‘get over it’—not shut the government down because of that fact,” he declared.
