From Fox News: New State Department reorganization plans will cut or consolidate more than 300 of the agency’s offices and bureaus as part of a massive overhaul seeking to streamline the department, according to agency officials.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio first announced plans in April to restructure the agency because the department was “bloated, bureaucratic, and unable to perform its essential diplomatic mission.”

The State Department submitted a notice to Congress Thursday disclosing plans for the overhaul — the largest restructuring for the agency since the Cold War, senior State Department officials told Fox News Digital.

The agency’s overhaul aims to cut red tape so the department can respond to threats more quickly, place greater emphasis on the agency’s “primary mission” representing the U.S. abroad and eliminate “bureaucratic overgrowth” in Washington, the congressional notice said.

Currently, there are about 700 offices within the State Department, and 311 (over 40%) will either be merged or cut completely. The reorganization will eliminate about 3,400 employees, which amounts to between 15% to 20% of the agency’s domestic staff.

The report quotes one senior official in the State Department as saying, “We have too many godd— offices. We’re trying to shrink offices rather than create them.”

The plans do including adding about 9 new offices, including new immigration security offices under the agency’s bureau of population, refugees and migration, as well as a new bureau of emerging threats that will address issues pertaining to artificial intelligence, hypersonic weapons and space.

Rubio announced in a post on X Thursday morning:

Over the past quarter century, the domestic operations of the State Department have grown exponentially, resulting in more bureaucracy, higher costs, and fewer results for the American people. Since my first day as Secretary, I have said that this Department must move at the speed of relevancy and, in April announced a broad reorganization of the Department to better achieve that goal.

Today, we took the next step in that process by notifying Congress of how we plan to do that.

The plan submitted to Congress was the result of thoughtful and deliberative work by senior Department leadership. We have taken into account feedback from lawmakers, bureaus, and long-serving employees. The reorganization plan will result in a more agile Department, better equipped to promote America’s interests and keep Americans safe across the world.
