The hunt is still on for the Charlie Kirk assassin. Two suspects in the tragic assassination had been taken into custody and later released. A team of police from different agencies is working to find the man who shot Kirk in front of his family, friends, and around 3,000 guests at Utah Valley University on Wednesday.
“This shooting is still an active investigation. The Utah Department of Public Safety (DPS) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) are co-leading this incident in unison with the Utah County Attorney’s office, the Utah County Sheriff’s office, and the local police departments,” The Utah Department of Public Safety said in a statement.
Investigators didn’t have much to go on Wednesday. After analyzing grainy security footage, they were seeking an individual “dressed in all dark clothing.”
During an update on the shooting Thursday morning, Utah Department of Public Safety Commissioner Beau Mason said officials have good video footage of the suspect, but they are not releasing it at this time, according to NBC News.
The suspect appeared to be college-aged, officials said, without giving further details.
Utah dispatch audio provided some details in the moments after Kirk was shot.
“He’s going to be wearing all black, black long gun, black tactical helmet, a black mask, possibly wearing a tactical vest and jeans,” a female dispatcher said over the radio, according to recordings.
Mason said they are using technology to try to identify the shooter.
“We are confident in our abilities right now, and we would like to move forward in a manner that keeps everyone safe and then moves this process appropriately,” Mason said.
“DPS’s State Crime Lab, along with all law enforcement involved, is working multiple active crime scenes. These were identified based on where the victim was shot, as well as the locations where the suspect and victim traveled,” a statement by the DPS said. “The shooting is believed to be a targeted attack. The shooter is believed to have fired from the roof of a building down to the location of the public event in the student courtyard. Any additional clarifications cannot be provided to protect the integrity of our investigation.”
Investigators have found the weapon used in the murder.
From NBC News:
The shooter is believed to have used a high-powered bolt-action rifle, Robert Bohls, special agent in charge for the FBI, said at a press conference.
“That rifle was recovered in a wooded area where the shooter had fled,” he said.
The FBI laboratory will be analyzing the weapon.
Investigators have also collected “footwear impression, a palm print, and forearm imprints for analysis,” he said.

NBC further reports:
Utah DPS Commissioner Beau Mason said the shooter arrived on the campus of Utah Valley University at 11:52 a.m. Authorities then tracked the subject through stairwells and up to and across the roof from where he fired the fatal shot.
After the shooting, Mason said officials tracked the shooter’s movements as he moved to the other side of the building, jumped off the roof and fled to a nearby neighborhood.
Officials were combing through the neighborhood and contacting witnesses, as well as anyone with doorbell cameras, to identify leads.
“We do have good video footage of this individual. We are not going to release that at this time,” Mason said. “We are working through some technologies and some ways to identify this individual.”
Mason added, “If we are unsuccessful, we will reach out to you as the media, and we will push that publicly to help us identify them. But we are confident in our abilities right now, and we would like to move forward in a manner that keeps everyone safe and then moves this process, appropriately.”
