From the Washington Examiner: Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) is being checked by a medical team after a fall as he was leaving a GOP lunch.

He was reportedly taken to his office after the fall, where a medical attended to him with a wheelchair.

Incoming Senate Republican Leader John Thune (R-SD) said that the Kentucky Republican was “fine.”

According to Sen. John Barrasso (R-WY), he fell as he was leaving the GOP lunch in a room just outside the Senate floor. He had a small scratch on his face that was bleeding, but was “100%” with it mentally. The medical team is ensuring that the injuries aren’t more serious.

John Bresnahan, co-founder of Punchbowl News, announced McConnell’s fall and said he has a cut on the left side of his face.

Soon after the incident, a spokesperson for McConnell’s office released the following statement: “Leader McConnell tripped following lunch. He sustained a minor cut to the face and sprained his wrist. He has been cleared to resume his schedule.”

Huffington Post reporter Igor Bobic posted a photo of medical staff entering McConnell’s office.

McConnell, 82, has served in the U.S. Senate since 1985. After much pressure, he finally agreed to give up the Republican leadership spot at the end of this year.

Sen. John Thune of South Dakota has been selected by his colleagues to be the new Senate Majority Leader, starting in January 2025.
