From the Washington Examiner: The governor of Puerto Rico requested that President-elect Donald Trump take a stand against Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro’s threats to invade the U.S. island territory.
Maduro made the threatening statements in question during the International Anti-Fascist Festival in Venezuela’s capital city of Caracas, where he invoked the revolutions sparked by former Venezuelan leader Simon Bolivar that liberated swaths of Latin America from the Spanish Empire.
“Just as in the north they have a colonization agenda, we have a liberation agenda,” Maduro said at the event. “And our agenda was written by Simón Bolívar. The freedom of Puerto Rico is pending, and we will achieve it with Brazilian troops […] leading the way.”
Maduro was just sworn in on Friday for his third 6-year term as president of Venezuela, so he will now be in office until 2031. His ‘victory’ was hotly contested, as voting data reportedly showed that opposition candidate Edmundo Gonzalez received twice as many votes.
However, Maduro and his government rejected that data, and declared him the winner. Election authorities never released the final vote tallies, the Examiner noted.
Now Maduro is threatening to just to take Puerto Rico.

Puerto Rican Governor Jenniffer Gonzalez-Colon sounded the alarm on Monday, as she shared a copy of a letter she has sent to President-elect Donald Trump, asking him to take an active role in protecting Puerto Rico after his inauguration.
“Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro called for an invasion of Puerto Rico, an open threat to the United States and our national security. I sent a letter to President @realDonaldTrump, trusting his administration will swiftly respond and make clear to the Maduro narco-regime that the U.S. will protect American lives and sovereignty and won’t bow down to petty, murderous thugs,” Gonzalez-Colon wrote on X.
In her letter to Trump, Gonzalez-Colon sounded the alarm:
“Yesterday, just a few days after holding an illegitimate swearing-in ceremony in a desperate attempt to cling on to power in Venezuela, socialist dictator Nicolas Maduro publicly proposed an invasion of Puerto. This is an open threat to the United States, our national security, and stability in the region. I trust your incoming administration will swiftly respond and make clear to the Maduro regime that, under your leadership, the United States will protect American lives and sovereignty and will not bow down to the threats of petty, murderous dictators.”
“As Governor of Puerto Rico, I am ready to work with you and your administration to counter this and other threats posed by the illegitimate Maduro dictatorship and support the people of Venezuela in their quest for freedom. I also look forward to engaging in meaningful discussion on how to best enhance Puerto Rico’s national security role and take a strong stance against the growing presence of our adversaries in the region.”

Former U.S. Ambassador to the UN, John Bolton, commented, “Maduro is a despot, who has killed his own people and stood by as socialism ravaged the Venezuelan economy and destroyed families. He knows nothing of freedom or liberation.”
