Well, that didn’t last long! The Los Angeles Police Department has already decided they’ve had enough of providing private security for defeated 2024 Democrat presidential candidate Kamala Harris.
Vice presidents typically only get 6 months of Secret Service protection after they leave office, but Joe Biden extended that for Harris until July 2026 – giving her a full 18 months of protection. However, President Trump revoked her Secret Service protection as of September 1.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass blasted Trump, claiming he was putting Harris in danger. Bass and California Gov. Gavin Newsom then reportedly arranged for both the Los Angeles Police Department and the California Highway Patrol to work together to provide security for Harris.
Now, accord to a report by the Los Angeles Times on Saturday, the Los Angeles Police Department has bailed out on the deal after less than a week, amid backlash from officers who were pulled away from crime cases just to protect Harris.
The LA Times wrote:
The Los Angeles Police Department on Saturday discontinued its protection for former Vice President Kamala Harris after heavy criticism within its own ranks that officers were being diverted from crime suppression, sources told The Times.
LAPD Metropolitan Division officers had been assisting the California Highway Patrol in protecting Harris and were visible until Saturday morning outside her Brentwood home.
The Times notes that there were about a dozen LAPD officers who had been working to protect Harris since Monday, September 1. But by Saturday, they called it quits, leaving the job to the California Highway Patrol.
“The CHP has not indicated how the LAPD’s move would alter its arrangement with the former vice president nor said how long it will continue,” the Times wrote.
The Los Angeles Police Protective League union who represents the LAPD officers, blasted Bass and Newsom for using taxpayer-funded officers to protect Harris, and released the following scathing statement:
“Pulling police officers from protecting everyday Angelenos to protect a failed presidential candidate who also happens to be a multi-millionaire… and who can easily afford to pay for her own security, is nuts!
“Mayor Karen Bass should tell Governor Newsom that if he wants to curry favor with Ms. Harris and her donor base, then he should open up his own wallet because LA taxpayers should not be footing the bill for this ridiculousness.”
This comes as Harris is about to set off on a book tour next month, to promote a book she wrote about her short presidential campaign. She is scheduled to appear at 15 locations, including London and Toronto.
Now Harris may have to break down and hire her own private security.
